Drunk Driver Crashes Stolen Car into Tree: Police

It happened on New Year's Day, police say.

A drunk driver in a stolen car crashed into a tree in Hampton Bays early New Year's Day morning, Southampton Town Police said.

According to police, a call was received Sunday at 5:48 a.m. about a single-car crash at the intersection of Squiretown Road and Baywoods Drive in Hamptons Bays.

Police responded and found a 1999 Ford Expedition that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree, authorities said.

Hugo Montesdeoca, 27, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was found to be intoxicated, unlicensed, and operating with a suspended status, police said.

Montesdeoca, of Patchogue, was arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing; during that time, it was reported that the vehicle Montesdeoca had been driving was reported stolen from the driveway of a residence on The Trail in Hampton Bays, police said.

He was charged with fourth degree grand larceny, a felony, aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and third degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor, police said.

He was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court and remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in lieu of $18,000 bail, police said.
