Dune Road Closed Due to 'Severe' Flooding: Supervisor

BREAKING: Sections of Dune Road were closed after Monday's powerful storm caused massive flooding, Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Sections of Dune Road were closed Tuesday morning after Monday's powerful nor'easter left much of the roadway flooded, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said.

The supervisor said he spent the early morning hours trying to journey from the Ponquogue Pavilion to the Tiana Pavilion, with much of the roadway under five to six inches of water.

Residents should not even attempt to pass, Schneiderman said. "It's really intense," he said. "It's bad."

While he said he's sure Dune Road has been hit even harder by past storms, after Monday's weather event, he said he would "characterize the flooding on Dune Road as severe."

Last night during the storm, one driver attempted to drive on Dune Road and needed to be rescued by police, he said.

The flood waters were receding after Tuesday morning's high tide, the supervisor said. But it's so deep in spots, he said, "It feels like you're driving through the bay."

Despite the flooding, Schneiderman said the storm "was not very eventful," with only one other road closed because of a downed tree and only a few sporadic power outages.

Beach erosion so far has been "minor to moderate," he said, based upon what he'd seen by early morning.. "But that may change. There may be spots where it's more severe."
