Rash Of Vehicle Thefts Continues In Southampton: Police

Items are still being stolen from unlocked cars, police said. Authorities are sharing tips to keep your valuables and vehicles safe.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Vehicle thefts are still a concern in Southampton Town, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, in recent months, detectives have been conducting an investigation into vehicle thefts and stolen valuables from inside cars. Area residents have reported their vehicles stolen in the overnight hours, and have reported valuables that were swiped, police said.

The thefts from vehicles have been due to cars being left unlocked overnight with valuables such as credit cards, computers, and cash left inside, police said.

Southampton Town Police said they'd like community "to take extra precautions" when leaving vehicles parked, especially during overnight hours.

  • Lock all doors and set alarms on vehicles
  • Park vehicle near motion detectors and/or video surveillance
  • Park vehicle in a locked garage if possible
  • Remove all key fobs (including any hidden keys)
  • Remove all valuables from sight.
  • Make sure you have all passwords available for OnStar
  • Call police immediately if you find your vehicle missing or items have been taken
