The Southampton mom has kicked off a GoFundMe to ask the community for help.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A single mom in Southampton has turned to crowdfunding to help find a safe home for her children.

The GoFundMe page, "Single Mom," has raised $930 of its $3,000 goal in 13 days.

On the page, Karo Carvajal, who created the GoFundMe appeal, said that she is going through a divorce and was supposed to have worked in the summer months but had a C-section.

"Thank God I had saved money, but not enough to rent a place," she said. Although she said she has been living in a "nice Christian family house," Carvajal said she's been living there for five months and needs to find new housing

Although she originally wanted to go home to her country, she said there was a snafu with passports.

Section 8 is unavailable and affordable housing programs have a long waiting list, she said.

"At this point I really need to find a place for my kids" and for herself, she said.

The reason why she created a GoFundMe, Carvajal said, was "because I need money to move from here to other place more affordable town. To get a reasonable rent, and totally avoid any shelter."

With the funds raised, the mom said she will have enough to pay the first, last and month's security necessary to secure a new home.

"I don't have family close, either. Good and God's friends, if I get a place to live, it will be a blessing for me and my kids," she wrote.
