Speed Limit to be Reduced on Route 114

State Assemblyman Fred Thiele requested the speed limit be lowered to protect pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

Those driving along Route 114 in Sag Harbor Village will soon have to start slowing down.

State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) recently announced that the State Department of Transportation (DOT) responded to his request that the speed limit be reduced on the route within Village limits.

The DOT conducted an investigation which included analysis of accident data, a speed study within the village limits, and a review of the existing roadway geometry, according to a Thiele.

Based on the results, the DOT will reduce the speed limit on northbound and southbound Route 114 from 40 mph to 35 mph from the southerly Sag Harbor Village Line to Liberty Street.

In addition, DOT maintenance crews will trim trees and shrubs along Route 114 to increase sight distance for side streets along the roadway.

“Lowering the speed limit on Route 114 will help to protect pedestrians, cyclists and drivers as they enter the Village of Sag Harbor,” Thiele said. “I am pleased that the DOT investigation concluded the need for a speed limit decrease
along this busy thoroughfare.”
