Town Asks Residents to Take Survey, Suggest Ideas for Future Design of Downtown Business District

Public participation is encouraged to help shape the future of the hamlet.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Southampton Town is seeking the public's help and asking them to take a survey to help consultants with the future design of the downtown business district in Hampton Bays.

The survey follows a public meeting with the Southampton planning department and the consultant, “Historic Concepts” which began the charrette process; the charrette process will help the consultant develop a pattern book by asking members of the community to choose features they believe will retain the character of the hamlet, a release said.

At the public meeting, approximately 40 residents people reviewed designs from other towns and villages and indicated their preferences for design elements in the overlay district, the release said.

The overlay district spans from Springville Road to Ponquogue Avenue and includes Good Ground Road, Main Street and the parcels adjacent to the new Good Ground Park.

The process, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said, will lead to changes in the town code to assure that design standards and forms are aligned with community expectations.

A decision was reached at the meeting to broaden the process by including a survey on the town’s website to reach a greater number of residents and business owners community-wide.
