In response to the explosion and fire at the Mahopac NYSEG Substation at Secor Road that left tens of thousands without power, State Senator Terrrence Murphy issued the following statement at midnight:

"From the numbers reported by NYSEG there are close to 65,000 people without electricity right now in northern Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess. Unfortunately, we have not heard from NYSEG about any of this and had to find out ourselves online. Stay tuned for more. I am working on this to find the answer of why it happened, to make sure it never happens again.

I'm concerned I haven't heard from Con Edison or NYSEG when I have 65,000 constituents without electricity. I will hold our public utilities accountable.

At the time of this statement, according to Murphy's office, he was driving into Putnam County to get answers personally. NYSEGs website had overloaded and was unavailable. It was not displaying any ETRs (estimated time of restoration) for the various outages prior it going offline.

At the time, NYSEG was reporting most power would be restored between 1 and 3 a.m.

At 1 a.m. Murphy said,

"I've toured the Secor substation and met some great Utility Workers who were in the middle of restoring power. I'm happy to report that up to ninety-nine percent has been restored due to their expertise and hard work."

"I also spoke to the superiors at NYSEG who assured me we will work together to improve communications protocols with both my office and the public in the future.

"A special thanks to our Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department for their swift action in putting out a fire that could have been a potential disaster. Job well done, great work."

UPDATE: The power outage in much of northeastern Westchester and most of Putnam County is due to a fire at a substation in Mahopac.

Power is out in much of northern Westchester and most of Putnam County.

"The power flickered at about 9:30, then was low voltage for about 10 minutes, then it dropped completely," said Carmel resident Jim Lange.

Driving through Somers into Mahopac and Carmel along Route 6 was an adventure, with traffic and street lights out, and the only ambient light coming from emergency exit signs in the darkened businesses.

According to the Putnam County News and Recorder, Cold Spring was just about the only community with power -- as of 10:05 p.m.

NYSEG has nothing about the outage on its website as of 10:50PM.

That frustrated a lot of people on Twitter.
