Coast Guard Officer From Hudson Valley Dies In Accident In AK

The man had served in the Coast Guard for 17 years.

MAHOPAC, NY — A Coast Guard officer from Mahopac was killed Thursday in a crane accident in Alaska. Michael Kozloski, 35, was working in a buoy yard in Homer, Alaska, when a crane tipped over and fell on top of him.

First responders tried giving him CPR and rushed him to a hospital, but he ultimately died of the injuries he sustained, the Journal News said.

Kozloski was a Coast Guard chief warrant officer and served in the Coast Guard for 17 years, according to the office of Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-Cold Spring.

Maloney serves as the chairman of the Subcommittee on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and said the Coast Guard is currently investigating the incident.

He released a statement that said his heart goes out to Kozloski's family, fellow Guardsmen and community in Mahopac.

"Michael dedicated his entire adult life to protecting our country as a member of the Coast Guard, and his service will not be forgotten," Maloney said.

"I ask the Hudson Valley to join me in praying for Officer Kozloski's family and offering support during this difficult time," he said.

Maloney said he will continue to monitor the situation as additional details come to light.

He said the subcommittee stands ready to provide support to the Guard as they seek answers and work to ensure accidents are prevented moving forward.
