Jeep Sinks In Lake Mahopac, A Westchester Woman Has Now Died: Police

The 55-year-old Somers woman was seen driving across the lake before the Jeep became submerged 30 yards from the shore Monday, cops said.

CARMEL, NY โ€” The woman who was seen driving a Jeep on a frozen lake, moments before it became submerged, has died, according to police.

The Carmel Police Department says that on Monday, around 5:45 p.m., they received several calls about a white Jeep driving on Lake Mahopac. Witnesses told police that they saw a female driver entering the lake from Swan Cove, and then driving in a north/northeast direction.

Officers responded to East Lake Boulevard and tried to locate the vehicle.

Carmel police officers and Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies, who were flagged down by passersby, determined that the Jeep had gone down into an open water area of the lake, and was fully submerged about 30 yards from the shore, north of the St. John's Prayer Garden on East Lake Boulevard.

After the Mahopac Falls Fire Department Dive Team and the Yorktown Heights Fire Department Dive Team responded, the unresponsive driver was removed by rescue drivers.

Police say that the 55-year-old Somers woman was the only person in the vehicle.

The Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department and Carmel EMS performed emergency lifesaving measures on the way to Putnam Hospital Center where the woman regained a pulse. However, she later died at the hospital.

Police say the identity of the driver is being held until the woman's family is notified.

East Lake Boulevard, from McMahon Place to North Lake Boulevard, was closed for most of the night.

Carmel police thanked the community and public safety partners that assisted.
