Former Carmel Police Chief Dies At 78, Honored By Putnam Sheriff

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY – The Putnam County Sheriff's Department is honoring the life of former Carmel Police Department Chief Greg Amato, who died on April 18. He was 78 years old.

Amato retired from the Carmel Police Department in 1998 after serving for 34 years.

"Chief Amato continued to unselfishly serve the town he loved through his volunteer work with many organizations," the Putnam County Sheriff's Department said in a statement on their website.

Those organizations included the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Lake Mahopac Rotary Club, the Mahopac Library, the 4-H Putnam County Fair and the Town of Carmel Historical Society.

Services will be held at a later date, according to his obituary.
