• Proposed 24-in N.Y. water pipeline faces calls for deeper review (undergroundinfrastructure.com) — A major 24-inch water pipeline is being proposed to move South Shore water east to the Southold town line, relieving about 60 overtaxed local wells at risk of saltwater intrusion. Southold officials are urging stronger conservation and a pause until a federal groundwater study is finished, while Greenport backs the project to bolster fire protection and storage capacity.
   

• Public safety protocol for outside agency activities remains in the works (timesreview.com) — Southold Town leaders are still hammering out a public safety protocol for how they'll notify the community when federal immigration or other outside agencies operate in town. Police Chief Steven Grattan has submitted a draft communication plan, but officials are debating how quickly to alert residents without causing unnecessary alarm, and may move toward a vote after the Aug. 25 meetings.
