Nassau Police Stepping Up DWI Enforcement for Memorial Day Weekend

Last year during Memorial Day weekend, there were 73 DWI arrests in Nassau County.

Nassau officials announced that police will be stepping up patrol to stop drunk drivers this Memorial Day weekend.

“Drunk drivers jeopardize the lives and safety of innocent people every time they get behind the wheel,” Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said. “Our Nassau County Police Officers will be targeting drunk drivers – not just this Memorial Day weekend but all year round - looking to prevent senseless alcohol-related accidents and locking up those who break the law."

Additional patrols have been assigned to target areas to look for drunk and impaired drivers across Nassau County as part of the STOP-DWI enforcement initiative.

Last year during Memorial Day weekend, there were 73 DWI arrests in Nassau County. In total there were 2,509 DWI arrests countywide and 28 DWI fatalities in 2016.

“The message this Memorial Day weekend and throughout the 100 deadliest days of summer is clear: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “Our partners in the police department are patrolling our roads and searching for drunk and drugged drivers who jeopardize the lives of everyone around them. Drunk and drugged driving devastates families that lose loved ones in car crashes."

The extra patrol will be funded by a grant from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee through the New York STOP DWI Foundation and the Nassau County STOP DWI Office.

The funds will allow Nassau police and police departments throughout the county to implement an effective DWI enforcement strategy that has proven very successful in years past.

“The Nassau County Police Department has a zero tolerance policy for those who drive under the influence putting those on the road at risk. This campaign is intended to identify and apprehend alcohol impaired drivers," Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said. "Our aim will be to make the roadways safe for all drivers and our targets will be those who disregard the law."
