Walter Cominsky, a Syosset resident of more than 60 years, passed away at the age of 91 on July 29.
“He was a very sweet man, good-hearted and he had a knack for helping everyone he knew,” said daughter, Lisa.

“I always had fond memories of my father marching in the Annual Syosset Memorial day parade,” Lisa said.
Cominsky was born in Windber, Pa. In high school, he was a four-year letterman in football. In 1943, he was an instrumental player in the team’s 10-0 undefeated season.

At the age of 18, Cominsky enlisted in the Navy. He crewed on the USS Hilbert Destroyer Escort (DE742) starting in 1943. After three years of service, he attended Penn State University. At Penn State, Cominsky played tailback for the football team.
After college, at the age of 30, Cominsky married his childhood sweet heart, Dorothy. They were married for 61 years. In the 1950s, he and his wife moved to Syosset. He earned a living installing and repairing dry wall. Eventually after many years of dry wall installation, he started up his own dry wall company, which his son Walter Jr. currently runs.
Cominsky never lost sight of his roots growing up in rural Pennsylvania. He took great solace in the outdoors. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping. Also, when the mood struck, he enjoyed a challenging crossword or jigsaw puzzle.
“An all-around nice guy with a great sense of humor,” said Steve Siegel, boyfriend of Lisa.
Cominsky’s death is mourned by his beloved wife Dorothy, his son Walter Jr. (Maureen), daughters Debbie and Lisa (Stephen Siegel). He is surely missed by his grandchildren, Kevin, David and Michael.
On the weekend of July 29, mass was held at and the funeral services took place at Cominsky’s body was laid to rest at the Calverton National Cemetery.
