WJC Students Buy 13 Turkeys for the Needy
Woodbury Jewish Center Religious School students collect money, and items, for charity.

The students of Woodbury Jewish Center's Religious School have always collected money for various charities. In Hebrew, it's called giving tzedakah, and it is considered one of the important lessons for students to learn.
This fall, Ellen Marcus, Principal of WJC's school, told the children that their tzedakah would be buying Thanksgiving turkeys for those who could not afford to buy one themselves. The goal was ten turkeys. The students were so motivated to help others that the school ended up purchasing 13 turkeys!
"The students really connected with the idea that people couldn't afford turkeys for the holiday." said Marcus. "It made a big difference to the children that they were helping individuals, rather than an institution or organization."

After the Thanksgiving break, WJC's Religious School will select the next focus of their giving. The school does collect non-perishable food for the needy year-round and is currently supporting a synagogue wide coat drive.
