Healthy Life Series Continues in January At Phelps Hospital

Phelps Hospital's Healthy Life series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects.

Thursday, January 2 & 16 - Bereavement Support Group A group in which members receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully manage their issues. This group is held at 12:00 pm in the 755 Building in room 545 on December 5th, and will meet in room 235 on the second floor on December 19th. Monday, January 6 - Keeping Memory Alive This program is for older adults who are still in good cognitive condition, and want to maintain their healthy brain. Learn about lifestyle factors that improve brain health. It is important for individuals to fire up their neurons often to keep a strong cognitive health. Join us for this new program where we will provide educational information, fun exercises, and stimulating activities to keep your brain active and sharp. This program takes place on the 1st Monday of every month at 10:00 am in the 755 Building on the fourth floor, Family Medicine Conference Room. Tuesday, January 7 - Phelps Bariatric Seminar This event provides information about Bariatric surgery and will be held at 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Wednesday, January 8 & 22 - Phelps Meditation Meditation is one of the best tools we have to balance our emotions, deal with physical and psychological distress, and promote the peace of the present moment.Meditation sessions will be held in the Family Medicine Residency Conference Room, located on the 4th floor of the 755 building at 11:00 am. Thursday, January 9 - Breakfast Club Is a series of breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each program includes a free breakfast, a presentation on healthy lifestyles topic and a light exercise program to improve strength and balance. It’s also a great opportunity for older adults to socialize with their peers. This program will be held at 8:30am - 10:30 am in the Cafeteria at Phelps Hospital. 701 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Thursday, January 9 - Osteoporosis Program Osteoporosis Education and Support Program is for people concerned about bone loss and fractures. Physicians, therapists and dietitians meet to discuss risk factors, causes, proper body mechanics and medication options. Thursday, January 9 - Phelps Bariatric Support Group This group offers a support network for Bariatric patients. This week the focus is Holiday Eating. Held in the Atrium Conference room at 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Friday, January 10 - Alzheimer's Caregivers Support Group Alzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group provides a safe place for caregivers, family, and friends of persons with dementia to meet and develop a mutual support system. Tuesday, January 14 - Better Breathers Club/Pulmonary Fibrosis Support A free interactive support group for people with breathing disorders or pulmonary fibrosis, sponsored by Phelps, the American Lung Association and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. In the basement Pulmonary Lab of the 701 Building, from 12:00 -1:00 pm. Call 914-366-3712 to register.

Wednesday, January 15 - Functional Medicine Functional Medicine Program is a holistic, patient-centered approach to preventing, treating, and reversing chronic disease by identifying and understanding the root causes of the individual’s symptoms and conditions, including genetic predispositions, environmental contributors, and lifestyle factors. Wednesday, January 15 - Holistic Pain Support Group When You’re In Pain And Don’t Know Where To Turn… Turn To Phelps. In addition to our pain management physician practice, people suffering from chronic pain will have access to holistic pain management services including educational programs, exercise classes and complementary medicine approaches, such as meditation and guided imagery, Tibetan Singing Bowls, aromatherapy and more. The Holistic Pain Support Program offers these services on a rotating basis every third Wednesday of the month at 9:00am in the Family Medicine Residency Conference Room. Thursday, January 16 - Bereavement Support Group Our bereavement support groups are meant to be a safe space for individuals to share and connect in their grief. Groups are facilitated by a licensed social worker and are free of charge to the community. Pre-registration is required. Tuesday, January 28 - Parkinson's Support Group Patients with Parkinson’s disease are invited to this free support group to meet and share their experiences and knowledge with others. We understand that if you or a loved one has Parkinson’s disease, it can affect many lives. Please join to receive education and information from our expert clinicians.Get the emotional support you need from others and learn more about treatment options to help alleviate symptoms and increase the quality of your life. ABC’s of Childcare Class This class for expectant parents is to help prepare you for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered include: how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed such as car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. $50 per couple, 7:00 - 9:00 pm in the Family Medicine Residency Conference Room located on the 4th floor of the 755 building. The Childbirth Experience/ LaMaze Method This series of classes is designed to cover all aspects of the childbirth experience. We offer information on the following topics: pregnancy, labor, delivery, caesarean section, the newborn, and the techniques of Lamaze childbirth preparation – including exercise, relaxation, breathing, and pharmacologic pain management. Tour and childbirth films are included. Taught by Certified Childbirth Educators on the Phelps Birthing Center nursing staff. If you have already taken the course and wish to sign up for a Lamaze refresher course, call 914-366-3382 for scheduling information. $150 per couple. Classes are offered Wednesdays 7:30 -10:00 pm and weekends (Saturdays) 9 am-4 pm. Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class This class for expectant parents offers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). $50 per couple. Cancellation policy: Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. This class is offered Saturdays, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm once a month.
