Healthy Life Series Continues in May At Phelps Hospital

Phelps Hospital offers a wealth of health education programs throughout the year. Programs during the month of March are featured here

Phelps Hospital’s Healthy Life series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted.

Phelps Hospital is pleased to introduce a new selection of Emergency Education Courses. Please note that all these classes have a fee.

Saturday, May 4 - Totsaver Program This 3-hour class includes the pediatric component of the American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends. Due to the physical demands of the class, pregnant women in their third trimester may wish to consult their physician for advice on participation. A CPR handbook is mailed out upon registration.1st Saturday of each month, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Hoch Center for Emergency Education, 755 North Broadway, Suite 200. $55 per person. Monday, May 6 and 13 - Pediatric Advanced Support Life Support (PALS) Original Course Pediatric Life Support is a two-day class. The AHA's PALS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC. This classroom instructor-led course uses a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systemic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics. The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. Cost is $250 per person. Tuesday, May 7 - Elder Law Series: Understanding the Basics of Retirement Plans and IRA Distribution Rules This session will discuss the basics of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), 401ks and other Retirement Plans. We will review early withdrawal penalties, required minimum distribution rules and strategies to help make your hard earned dollars last throughout your retirement years. 6:00-7:30 pm in the Auditorium. Wednesday, May 8 and 22 - Meditation Meditation can remove stress and replace it with a dose of inner peace. It’s one of the best tools we have to balance our emotions, deal with physical and psychological distress, and promote the peace of the present moment. Join our free, biweekly meditation sessions to practice mindfulness and learn how meditation can benefit your overall health and well-being. Sessions take place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

Thursday, May 9 - Breakfast Club Designed especially for seniors, includes a free breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program to improve strength and balance. Thursday, May 9 - Osteoporosis Program Osteoporosis Education and Support Program is for people concerned about bone loss and fractures. Physicians, therapists and dietitians meet to discuss risk factors, causes, proper body mechanics and medication options. The sessions are held from 10:30 am to 11:30 am the second Thursday of the month in the Phelps Boardroom (C Level). Enter at the Auditorium entrance and take the elevator to the C level. Friday, May 10 - Alzheimer's Caregivers Support Group Alzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. Saturday, May 11 - Prenatal Breastfeeding Class This class for expectant parents offers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). $50 per couple. Tuesday, May 14 - Free Skin Cancer Screening Take Advantage of our all day free skin cancer screening, just in time for the summer season with two of our dermatologists. Dr. Jeffrey Sturza, MD will speak at 8:30 - 11:45 and Dr. Alison Stallings, MD with speak at 1:00 - 4:00 pm. All screenings will be held at Mobile Medical Unit at Entrance to 777 Building. Tuesday, May 14 - Better Breathers Club/Pulmonary Fibrosis Support A free interactive support group for people with breathing disorders or pulmonary fibrosis, sponsored by Phelps, the American Lung Association and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Thursday, May 16 - ABCs of Baby Care This class for expectant parents is to help you prepare for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered included how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed such as a car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. Thursday, May 16 - Women’s Health: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Research suggests that women are more likely to experience symptoms of stress than men. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) is an empirically based program that was originally created to reduce stress levels among hospital patients, but has been widely adapted to help all people with issues related to stress, anxiety, psychological disorders such as depression, and other health issues, such as chronic pain. MSBR is a highly individualized approach to mindfulness that helps people become more aware of their feelings and actions to make choices that reduce their overall suffering. 6:00 pm-8:00 pm in The James House, 701 N Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591. Saturday, May 18 - The Childbirth Experience/ LaMaze Method This series of classes is designed to cover all aspects of the childbirth experience. We offer information on the following topics: pregnancy, labor, delivery, caesarean section, the newborn, and the techniques of Lamaze childbirth preparation – including exercise, relaxation, breathing, and pharmacologic pain management. Tour and childbirth films are included. Taught by Certified Childbirth Educators on the Phelps Birthing Center nursing staff. Thursday, May 21 - Senior Steps Senior Steps is a program offering health screenings. Once a month, seniors can attend one of the following screenings: blood pressure and pulse oximetry, balance, cognition, low vision, voice, swallowing, and hearing or attend a program such as nutrition education and medication reconciliation with a pharmacist. Thursday, May 21 - Cancer Institute Monthly Community Day A full day of free support groups for cancer patients and their caretakers. Events include, Laughter Yoga, Collaborative Partnership Council, New Patient Orientation, New Patient Chemotherapy Review Class, Nutrition for the Cancer Patient and Support Session/Speakers. Drop in for a specific event or enjoy the whole day. Light refreshments served. From 10:30 am - 4:30 pm in the Radiation Medicine Conference Room, 1st floor of the 777 Building. Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This educational program for adults with diabetes is held periodically at Phelps. Learn what diabetes is, different medications available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. Pre-registration and a physician referral are required. There may be a charge for this class, depending on insurance coverage. Please note that attendance at both classes is required. Ostomy Support Group A free support group for individuals with ostomy and their caregivers sponsored by Phelps and the United Ostomy Association of America. The group meets on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm in the Atrium. Call 914-366-3395 to register.
