The number of areas in the neighborhood that saw an uptick in Trump votes is slightly surprising given the Upper West Side's reputation as a bastion of liberalism.
For example, a precinct in the Lincoln Square area from 61st to 63rd Streets saw its number of Trump votes increase by 13 percent in 2020 compared to 2016.
A different UWS area going from 100th and Amsterdam to 110th and Columbus saw 14 of its 16 voting precincts increase its number of Republican votes in 2020.
The majority of Upper West Side voting precincts had 200 to 800 voters.
Here's how the New York Times explained how it created the voting precinct boundaries.
"Where possible, we used official precinct boundaries provided by the states or counties, but in most cases these were not available and we generated boundaries ourselves, using L2 voter-file points to guess the precinct for each census block group; this results in generally accurate precinct boundaries, but can be rough in no- or very-low-population places like business parks or uninhabited rural land," creators of the interactive map wrote.
While more people in some Upper West Side areas voted for Trump in 2020 than they did in 2016, President Joe Biden still easily won every single precinct in the neighborhood.
One of the precincts between 100th and Amsterdam and 110th and Columbus that saw a 13 percent increase in Trump voters in 2020 still overall had 85 percent of voters picking President Joe Biden.
Additionally, a similar amount of UWS precincts actually saw more Democratic votes in 2020 than in 2016.
