A similar show of appreciation at New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan on Williams Street was met with a round of applause from the healthcare workers themselves, who gathered on the steps a safe distance from the firefighters to clap and wave.

"Selfless heroism is at the heart of every #First Responder," the hospital wrote. "We salute #NewYorksBravest as they honor our fight against #COVID19."

The surprise applause is the latest show of support for New York City's healthcare workers as they fight at the country's epicenter of the coronavirus crisis.

The NYPD's 34th Precinct also recently showed their support for local healthcare workers by delivering pizzas to the Allen Pavilion Hospital.

Last week, applause rang through the streets in all five boroughs as New Yorkers leaned out their windows, stood on street corners or gathered on stoops for a simultaneous #ClapBecauseWeCare demonstration.

New York City has nearly 45,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 1,100 people have died from the virus as of Wednesday morning, according to city data.
