Cops: Former Legislator Took Jewelry, Purse from Reported Ex-Girlfriend
David Mejias, former Nassau legislator, took bracelet and pocketbook from woman's East Garden City apartment, cops said.

A former Nassau County legislator faces charges after entering his reported ex-girlfriend’s home and stealing her purse and jewelry, according to Nassau County Police.
Detectives said David Mejias, 44, of Farmingdale, entered an East Garden City apartment without permission at 10:50 p.m. Thursday. Mejias had a key to the apartment, which reportedly belongs to his ex-girlfriend, according to Newsday.
While inside, Mejias took a Louis Vuitton pocketbook from a counter before demanding the victim hand over a bangle bracelet, cops said. Mejias then “pushed past the victim,” found the bracelet in the bedroom, and refused to leave the apartment, cops said.

The apartment owner, an unidentified 35-year-old woman, called the police, cops said. Mejias went to his home in Farmingdale before they arrived, police said.

Mejias was found in his home with the victim’s belongings and was taken into custody, cops said.
Mejias was charged with third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. After Mejias pleaded not guilty, a judge issued a $2,500 bail and an order of protection for the victim, said Newsday.
Thursday’s was the second time Mejias faced charges involving an ex-girlfriend, according to earlier reports. In 2010, the Democratic candidate was seeking a seat against Sen. Kemp Hannon when he was charged with stalking, reckless endangerment, and menacing.
Mejias reportedly followed a woman driving on Piping Rock Road in Matinecock, passed her, and slammed on his brakes causing her to stop, Nassau Police said. After Mejias got out of his car and began screaming at the woman, she drove away as Mejias continued to follow her, cops said.
Mejias was cleared of the charges in 2011 and called the incident a “business dispute.”
Mejias, a family law attorney, is a founder of Mejias, Milgrim & Alvarado in Glen Cove and has been honored by the Coalition Against Domestic Violence, according to his profile on the firm’s website.
