Family-Centered Patient Advocacy Course on Long Island

Pulse Center for Patient Safety, Education & Advocacy again offers community-based education to help us all keep safe during medical care.

Pulse CPSEA is pleased to announce the next in its ongoing series of short public education courses, Family-Centered Patient Advocacy. The training, hosted by Adelphi University College of Nursing and Public Health, will be held August 20 and 21, 2019, 5:30 to 9:30 pm. Participants receive a certificate of completion following the 8-hour class, and a tour of the Adelphi College of Nursing & Public Health Simulation Lab.

What is a patient advocate, why do we need them, and who can be one?

Everyone who is ill or injured and receiving medical care needs someone to provide support and to protect the patient’s interests while navigating the health care system. The role of a patient advocate — who can be a professional, or simply a well-trained member of the patient’s circle — is to support the patient in a number of practical ways, while also being alert for any risks presented by the care. (Medical error is now the third-leading cause of preventable death in the US.)

Pulse’s training includes: patient safety and avoiding medical injury; advance directives; HIPAA; policies and standards; the complaint process; “who's who in healthcare”; health literacy, and lots on communication, all explained through true stories of experiences from the bedside! Trainees also enact role-play scenarios that make these topics very real.

One past participant has said, “There was a great flow to the presentation and it was easy to understand. I think the role-playing portion was very helpful.”
