Metropolitan Synod Hosts Multicultural Day of Worship
Lutheran Church Bishop Robert Rimbo Invites Communities To Share And Learn About One Another's Cultures At Multicultural Day
[Manhattan, April 10, 2015] – To help break down the barriers hindering those with different backgrounds from working together, Robert Alan Rimbo, Bishop of The Metropolitan New York Synod (MNYS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is inviting people of all ethnicities and experiences to a multicultural day of worship and workshops on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m. at The Lutheran Church of the Epiphany located at 35 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead.
The day will begin with Bishop Rimbo leading morning worship, featuring leaders from ELCA multicultural ministries across the country, congregants dressed in clothing that celebrates their heritage, a key note address from Pastor Rubén Durán, ELCA Program Director for New Congregations and workshops. Questions pertaining to obstacles that prevent individuals or groups from working together will be explored during the workshops, including: How do we cross the borders that divide us? How do we do collaborative ministries? and How are we all interconnected?

“Just as the New York metropolitan area is a melting pot of different ethnicities and cultures, we are a multicultural Synod and celebrate that richness of diversity by helping the community to learn from and better understand one another,” said Bishop Rimbo. “Together we can do more and this event seeks to unite the community in understanding, spirit and cause. Only by walking together in faith, walking together in purpose and walking together in humanity, will we be able to affect positive change and continue to do God’s work. Together.”

According to a recent summary of congregational statistics, more than a quarter of the Synod’s membership is composed of diverse ethnic groups, including those from African National/African-Caribbean, American Indian/Alaska Native, Arab/Middle Eastern, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latino/Hispanic and multiracial backgrounds. Considering its own multicultural makeup and commitment to its strategic plan, the Synod is reaching out to these diverse groups to bring together and better serve the community.
