SEAFORD, NY — A group of Seaford Middle School students raised over a grand for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by collecting loose change and spare dollar bills in their annual Pennies for Patients collection drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, according to a Seaford Union Free School District news release.

As part of the drive, which was organized by the National Junior Honor Society, under the direction of adviser Sarah Frank, the students visited classrooms each morning throughout February to collect donations, and they also took time out of their lunch periods to help count the money, officials said.

All together the students raised $1,056.54 to aid the charity’s research and programs.

The students believe the fundraiser is important because it helps provide treatment for children battling cancer and advances the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission in finding a cure, district officials said.

“It makes me feel happy to know that a little kid might have their day brightened by us because of the money we collected,” said eighth grader Shannon McClernon.

Frank noted that the 7th grade alone donated about $800 and will receive a special prize for its generosity.
