1 Dead, 2 Critical Following Washington Heights Hit-And-Run: NYPD

A tractor-trailer slammed into a vehicle on the Cross Bronx Expressway approaching the George Washington Bridge and fled the scene.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A man is dead and two women are in critical condition after a tractor-trailer slammed into a vehicle on the Cross Bronx Expressway in Washington Heights and fled the scene, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch.

The fatal hit-and-run crash occurred Monday around 3:16 a.m. on a section of the Cross Bronx approaching the George Washington Bridge, police told Patch. The 25-year-old man driving the vehicle the tractor-trailer hit was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The two female passengers, 28 and 39, were taken to Harlem Hospital in critical but stable condition, police told Patch.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was apprehended by Port Authority police at the Vince Lombardi rest stop in Ridgefield, N.J., and is in custody, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch.

Charges have not yet been filed against the tractor-trailer driver and the NYPD did not reveal his identity.

The identities of the victims were not released pending family notification, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch.
