5 Men Shot + Street Vendor Food Trashed + Ida Victims Cash Aid
Here's a five-minute guide to everything worth knowing in town today.
Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Here are the most important things going on today in Washington Heights-Inwood.
First, today's weather:
Possible light rain in the afternoon and evening. High: 77 Low: 52.
Here are the top stories today in Washington Heights-Inwood:
- Gunfire erupted in Upper Manhattan early Monday, leaving five men
shot, including the suspected gunman who was wounded by a police sergeant. It happened around 4 a.m. outside the 11:11 Restaurant and Lounge in the vicinity of 10th Avenue and West 211th Street. Police officers in the Inwood area witnessed a group involved in a "strong discussion" outside the vicinity and approaching the group with a ghost gun. (WPIX 11 New York) - Mayor Bill de Blasio trashed his own sanitation department Monday
— blaming bureaucratic bumbling for fresh food getting destroyed when an illegal Bronx vendor was shut down. The videos, shared by the Street Vendor Project came after officials shut down the stand being run by Diana Hernandez Cruz, who said she had worked there for five years — although she admitted she did not have a permit. (NYPOST) - Gov. Kathy Hochul comes to Queens Monday to announce $27 million in cash assistance for flooding victims excluded from FEMA help — including many still rebuilding their homes just blocks from where the governor will speak. Weeks after record rainfall from Hurricane Ida remnants wrecked basement apartments and claimed 13 lives locally, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Bill de Blasio are expected to announce financial aid Monday for undocumented New Yorkers locked out of federal assistance. (The City)
- A senior MTA bus supervisor evaded toll charges by blocking his car's plates and owed more than $100,000 in tolls and fees spanning almost a decade, according to an investigation by the agency's Inspector General Carolyn Pokorny released Monday. The assistant general superintendent in question apparently bragged to his co-workers about dodging the charges he owed to three different state tolling agencies, including tens of thousands of dollars to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's own Bridges and Tunnels division (B&T). (AMNY)
- Sunday was the end of Climate Week, which is why many are focusing more
than usual on the damage climate change is causing in the New York region. Unfortunately, in its woefully incomplete, overly ideological steps to modernize, New York's energy mix to limit the greenhouse gases that are responsible for global warming, the state is asking for more trouble. The state intends that, by 2040, no greenhouse gases will be emitted in generating electricity. Oil- and natural-gas-burning electric power plants will be replaced by renewable wind and solar energy installations. (DailyNews)
