Washington Heights Apartment Fire Kills Man in Basement, Police Say
The fire broke out around 9:50 a.m. Wednesday in a Washington Heights apartment building. A man's body was later discovered by firefighters.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A Wednesday morning fire that broke out in a Washington Heights apartment building has left one dead, police told Patch.
The blaze broke out around 9:50 a.m. in the basement of a building on the 600 block of West 184th Street near St. Nicholas Avenue, police said. After the fire was put out FDNY responders found a man's body in the basement of the building, police said. The man was unconscious and unresponsive and suffering from severe burns throughout his body, police said.
The man, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police told Patch.

The Fire Marshall will investigate the cause of the fire and the Medical Examiner will investigate the man's cause of death, police said.
