Here are the top stories today in Washington Heights-Inwood:
- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wants the federal government to more quickly implement rules to curb untraceable so-called "ghost guns," as NYPD seize more and more of the unregistered firearms. "Ghost guns are haunting all of New York, the city, the suburbs — you name it," said Schumer at a Sunday press conference in Manhattan. "The evil gunrunners, those who make these things, are trying to find a way around the background checks law and this is what they use — it's all legal." (LongIslandPress)
- More than 17,000 Hispanic residents left Washington Heights and Inwood between 2010 and 2020, while a total of 4,824 white residents moved into both neighborhoods during the same period, El Diario reports. The widespread interpretation of this population displacement trend is echoed almost unanimously by the Upper Manhattan area's residents, who say rents have skyrocketed. (City Limits)
- In the absence of comprehensive governmental safety nets, New York women
banded together, adapted their skill sets, organized aid and fought for policy changes. What's next for them? In March, hundreds of New Yorkers attended rallies demanding that the state government allocate funds to assist almost 300,000 excluded workers through the economic downturn. They marched across the city's neighborhoods, occupied bridges and the demonstrated at the capitol of state. (THE CITY) - A wild incident in Manhattan left one man stabbed, sent a driver backing their car toward a cop and an officer firing off one round from his weapon, authorities said. The episode began when a man was stabbed in the stomach by a knife-wielding attacker at Ninth Avenue and West 203rd Street in Inwood, cops said. The stabber then drove off in an older-model gold car, authorities said. (New York Post )
- A senior project director of Foot Locker's Greenhouse incubator programs is a first-generation Dominican-American and comes from a family who worked in the apparel industry. Mel Peralta is a native New Yorker from the Bronx borough. Peralta's family all worked at the same baby clothing manufacturing company in the Garment District — something that clearly would have a major influence on his life. Since its inception in 2019, Greenhouse has launched projects with several people and brands of note, but Peralta believes the level of notoriety has been secondary to the purpose and narrative.
