UPTOWN, MANHATTAN — More people getting tested for the coronavirus in Washington Heights and Inwood are testing positive than they were a few weeks ago, new city data shows.

All four zip codes that make up the two neighborhoods saw at least a 5 percent increase in the percent of people testing positive for COVID-19 as of April 14, compared to the percent of positive tests that were first reported by the city's Health Department on March 31.

The city data includes the total number of people tested in each zip code, along with the number, and what percent, of those tests that came up positive.

The largest jump was in Inwood's 10034 zip code, where 57 percent of people who got tested had a positive result, compared to just 41 percent of people at the end of March.

In zip code 1033, which extends from West 173rd Street up to West 187th Street, 62 percent of people tested had positive results, compared to 53 percent in March.

Zip code 10040, which ends at Dyckman Street, and 10032, which extends from West 153rd Street to West 173rd, both jumped about 5 percentage points.

The data is based only on those who have received tests, which have become increasingly difficult to procure.

As it was in March, the highest case count among the four zip codes was the southern-most portion of Washington Heights, 10032, where 775 people tested positive as of April 14. That number is now the second highest in Manhattan.

Here are the latest numbers:

  • 10032: 775 positives
  • 10033: 671 positives
  • 10034: 367 positives
  • 10040: 532 positives

The rate of people testing positive and the case counts in Washington Heights and Inwood were still on the lower end when compared to some of the hardest-hit areas, such as one Queens zip code that had 2,510 cases as of March 14, the most in the city. In that zip code, 78 percent of the people tested had a positive result.

Overall, Uptown had nearly three times as many cases on April 14 as they did on March 31, which is largely consistent with the rate New York City's case count has surged the last few weeks.

There were 111,424 cases in New York City on April 14, compared to 41,771 cases on March 31. In Washington Heights and Inwood, there were 2,345 cases on April 14, compared to 888 on March 31.
