Washington Heights Fire: 2nd Blaze Breaks Out In 2 Days, FDNY

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A fire broke out Tuesday morning in the same building where a 7-alarm fire injured 14 people on Monday, an FDNY spokeswoman said.

Firefighters returned to 775 Riverside Drive — located near the Hudson River and West 156th Street — around 10:30 Tuesday to extinguish a fire in a building dumbwaiter shaft, an FDNY spokeswoman said. The fire was placed under control shortly after units arrived on scene, an FDNY spokeswoman said.

Nobody was injured during Tuesday morning's fire, an FDNY spokeswoman said. The cause of Tuesday's fire is under investigation.

Firefighters battled a massive fire for hours at the same building Monday. The fire broke out on the second floor of the building around 2 p.m. and spread to the building's cockloft through a dumbwaiter shaft, fire officials said Monday. Firefighters put the blaze under control shortly after 9 p.m., according to fire officials.

Investigators with the city fire marshall's office ruled that the fire was caused accidentally by an electric toaster, fire officials said.

Fourteen people were injured during Monday's fire, fire officials said.
