UPTOWN, MANHATTAN — An annual exhibit that celebrates women making art in Northern Manhattan will kick off for the 10th year in a row with an opening reception on Thursday.

The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance's "Women in the Heights: Creating for the Future" will officially open at the Rio II Gallery on Riverside Drive, where it will stay until the end of the month.

The exhibit, in partnership with Broadway Housing Communities and The Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling, celebrates women from Manhattan's northern neighborhoods, including Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem.

This year, organizers said the exhibit is particularly significant given the 100-year anniversary of women's suffrage and a "very important presidential election that will greatly impact the future for women."

The exhibition features works in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and mixed media, created by 33 artists who address the idea of "Creating for the Future" in ways that range from literal, to abstract, to poetic, organizer said.
