Writing Program Launched For Dominican Community In Wash Heights
The nonprofit Mighty Writers is bringing a writing program to Washington Heights specifically designed for the Dominican community.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A literacy nonprofit has designed a virtual writing program and class this month for the Dominican community in Washington Heights.
The workshop is called "Family Cook Night," and participants will make caramelized sweet plantains as they talk about Dominican food, music, and culture.
The online workshop will kick-off on Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. for kids eight to 14 and their families — you can sign up for the event here.

It will be hosted by Noemy Jorge, a registered dietician who grew up in Washington Heights.
Jorge will lead the children through writing prompts and give them tips and tricks for clearer writing as they make the tasty plantains.

"I'm a registered dietician, so we'll include thoughts about what's really healthy for us," Jorge said in a news release. "But we'll also have a lot of fun."
The workshop will be run by the literacy nonprofit Mighty Writers, founded in 2009 to teach kids to think clearly and write with clarity. Mighty Writers brings together 400 writers, reachers, and journalists to teach 150 writing classes to 3,500 kids each year.
The workshop at the end of January will be the first one Mighty Writers does in New York City.
