The student presented her findings at the World Aquaculture Society Conference in New Orleans.

After months of researching the oysters on Long Island, Westhampton Beach High School junior Mira Patel presented her findings at the World Aquaculture Society Conference in New Orleans during the winter school break.

“She is now published,” said Principal Christopher Herr, “It is pretty amazing.”

Patel conducted her research in conjunction with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Southold, testing the effect of a variety of floating upweller systems, also known as FLUPSYs, on the growth of oyster seeds.

“I was looking for solutions to Long Island’s oyster problem,” said Patel, who, through her research, found that two systems worked best. “These findings are very important for Long Island’s waterways.”
