Westchester Nears 8,000 Active Cases Of Coronavirus

The county executive said the numbers are harkening back to the height of the early days of the pandemic.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Westchester County is coming close to 8,000 active cases of the new coronavirus, reaching levels not seen since the spring.

At his Monday news conference, County Executive George Latimer said the state number released Sunday showed 54,671 confirmed cases of the virus year to date.

The number of active cases was 7,830, meaning those people who tested positive but haven't yet cleared the two-week infectiousness period.

Latimer said the numbers continue to not be good.

Two weeks ago, the number of active cases was 4,662. Three weeks ago it was around 3,400.

"We've more than double the number of cases in three weeks," Latimer said.

"We have returned to a period of time similar to where we were in the spring," he said.

Hospitalizations have continues rising. The latest number is more than 300, Latimer said, which fortunately doesn't begin to approach the maximum number of hospital beds in the county.

However, during the summer the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19-related illness was in the mid-40s to low-50s.

Deaths are also increasing, Latimer said. The total number of fatalities now is 1,529, which is 15 more than the week before and almost 30 more than two weeks prior.

Over the summer, there were days when there were no deaths reported, he said.

As far as the number of active cases, for comparison, on April 20, Latimer said there were slightly more than 10,000 active cases of the virus, out of 23,803 total confirmed cases.

At that time, there were almost 1,100 new coronavirus-related hospitalizations.

A little more than a month later, on May 27, there were 1,575 active cases. There had been a seven-week decline in the number of active cases at that time, Latimer said.
