500 Greenpoint Locals Wait Days For National Grid To Restore Gas

Guernsey Street residents have been unable to take a hot bath in their own homes since Sunday.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — More than 500 Greenpoint residents have been unable to cook or take a hot bath since Sunday, when National Grid cut gas service, according and residents said.

“It’s [the] middle ages!” Guillaume Légaré, a Guernsey Street resident told Patch, adding that he had no idea when his block would return to the 21st Century. “No one is giving us any info at National Grid.”

National Grid cut off gas on four blocks near Meserole Street, Guernsey Street and Manhattan Avenue on Sunday and left 518 customers without service, Councilman Stephen Levin’s deputy chief of staff Glomani Bravo-Lopez tweeted Tuesday.

Bravo-Lopez told Greenpoint residents that a broken water pipe had caused damage to the gas line that National Grid workers were hoping to have repaired by Tuesday evening.

But the repair deadline came and went without service getting restored and several Greenpoint residents took to Twitter hoping to find out when they might next expect to take a hot shower in their own homes.

Patch tried to contact the National Grid press office to ask for more information about the problem and when residents could expect service to be restored, but no one picked up the phone.
