A Doctor in the Making: Student of Distinction Jack DeTomaso

Katonah-Lewisboro’s Jack DeTomaso was recognized as a Student of Distinction Wednesday at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES for excellence in the New Visions Health program. Jack was originally scheduled to be recognized at the Katonah Lewisboro Board of Education meeting in February but weather cancellations and other scheduling difficulties caused the honor to be postponed.

Jack’s dream is to become a surgeon one day and his teacher Susan Collins said it is likely to come true.

“He has a calm, even personality, a great asset for a doctor,” Ms. Collins said. “Plus, he is diligent about handing work in, has great grades and a natural curiosity in class. His questions are always really intelligent and well thought out.”

In the New Visions Health program, Jack has had the opportunity to work in all hospital rotations at Northern Westchester Hospital, including the operating room, Emergency Room and pediatric divisions. “So far, I’m most interested in surgery,” Jack said.

When he’s not studying at The Tech Center, Jack can be found at his part-time job as a pharmacy technician in Weinstein’s drug store or parking cars at his job as a valet. In his spare time, Jack is passionate about music and loves to play the guitar and harmonica.

Jack credits the New Visions program with giving him hands-on experience for his future career. “I love the New Visions program,” Jack said, “because I get firsthand experience in hospitals. Not every student who is interested in medicine has the chance to do that.”
