
YORKTOWN, NY — Two carpenters unions in the Hudson Valley are recruiting apprentices. The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the New York City District Council of Carpenters will conduct a recruitment from July 11, 2018 through June 12, 2019 for 25 carpenter (piledriver/dockbuilder) apprentices; 20 linoleum, resilient tile, and carpet layer apprentices; 10 cabinet maker apprentices; and 10 millwright apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced.
Also, the Northeast Carpenters is looking for five carpet, tile and linoleum layer apprentices. Their recruitment drive began June 6.
New York City District Carpenters
Applications must be obtained in person at the New York City District Council of Carpenters Training Center, 395 Hudson Street, 2nd floor (Clarkson Street entrance), New York City, NY, on the second Wednesday of each month, excluding December 12, 2018 and January 9, 2019. Applications will be available on the 2nd Wednesday from 7 to 7:30 a.m. only. There will be no admittance after 7:30 a.m. The Carpenters Training Center will distribute as many applications as possible in the given time frame. Only the applicant will be allowed to complete an application. In order to receive an application, applicants must provide government-issued picture identification. If the applicant does not have a valid ID, they will not be given an application. Applications will include an instruction sheet regarding the requirements to return the application.

Completed applications must be submitted by mail to: JATC ______ (the trade being applied for, choose one) Apprentice Applications, 395 Hudson Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10014. All applications must be postmarked no later than five business days of receipt of application. Failure to comply will disqualify the individual from further consideration.

Applicants that comply with the previous application steps will be required to attend a four-hour initial orientation. Applicants must arrive on time. All applicants must bring originals of all of the verification documents previously mentioned (including government-issued picture identification).
Every applicant in attendance will be scheduled for an interview at a future date. Applicants that do not arrive on time to their scheduled interview will be disqualified from further consideration.
As apprentices are requested by signatory contractors, the top-ranking candidates will be notified to attend a final orientation. Applicants must arrive on time to the final orientation with proper documentation. Those that do not comply will be disqualified from further consideration. A conditional offer of employment will be made to all attendees of the final orientation. These applicants will be required to submit to a substance abuse screening,within 48 hours, at a collection site designated by the JATC. The substance abuse screening will be paid for by the JATC.
The New York City District Carpenters committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 17 years old at the time of offered employment.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the safety of themselves or others.
- Must pass a substance abuse screening, at the expense of the sponsor, within 48 hours of selection and prior to indenture. Applicants that do not pass the substance abuse screening will be notified and disqualified from further consideration.
- Must provide proof of any trade-related experience, certification, or education, after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
- Must provide DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Northeast Carpenters
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters is conducting a recruitment from through June 5, 2019 for five linoleum, resilient tile and carpet layer apprentices.
Applications can be obtained only in-person Mondays thru Fridays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. excluding legal holidays. All applications must be received no later than June 4, 2019. Local places to obtain applications:
- Hopewell Junction - Local 279, 10 Corporate Park Drive, Hopewell Junction, NY
- Hudson Valley - Hudson Valley Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY
The Northeast Carpenters committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old. A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC). A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application. Proof will be required at the time of application.
- Must sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a linoleum, resilient tile, and carpet layer, and must attest to the same, which includes:
- Performing constant repetitive motions.
- Standing, stooping, and kneeling for prolonged periods of time.
- Working in all types of weather conditions, including rain, snow, cold, heat and direct sunlight.
- Lifting and carrying objects over 50 lbs.
- Working on scaffold and in confined spaces.
- Climbing and working from heights
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction. A signed statement attesting to this must be submitted at the time of application.
- Must be willing and able to attend related instruction, as required.
- Must provide New York State ID, after the offer of employment.
- Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee, which includes all counties in New York State except Nassau, Suffolk, Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, and parts of Rockland and Westchester.
- Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, upon and offer of position.
- Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, at the time of appointment. If applicant tests positive, he/she cannot reapply for one year.
- Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at the time of interview. If an applicant should not pass the entrance test, this does not qualify him/her from consideration.
- Must participate in an interview, if selected

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
