Diary Of A Yorktown Player: Laura Pironi
Bound for DeSales University, catcher Laura Pironi shares her end of season thoughts with Patch.

Laura Pironi is a senior co-captain and catcher for the Yorktown softball squad, which qualified for the Section 1 Class AA tournament. The Huskers lost in the opening round 5-2 at Clarkstown North Friday, May 28.
We asked Pironi to share some of her thoughts with Patch:
Losing the sectional game to Clarkstown North was tough. Unfortunately things didn't go our way that game even though we put up a good fight.

Losing the game was tough for our team because we all didn't want to stop playing softball with one another and we just never wanted our season to end. For the eight seniors on our team it was emotional because it was our last time playing softball for Yorktown.
Overall, though, we still had a good season as a team. Our final record was 13-8.

This season our team's defense and hitting was very solid. Carolyn Farmer, one of our pitchers, did a great job of holding her composure on the mound and always got the job done. Nicole Wilson, another pitcher, also did very well on the mound and always put the ball where it had to go. Everyone on our team really stepped up this season and gave it their all.
Our first baseman, Jackie Gonin, made great picks at first throughout the season and our shortstop/co-captain, Erica Wenzel, who is great in the field, knew exactly how to read whatever ball that was hit to her and always came up with the play.
Nicole Kahn, our third baseman, has a cannon of an arm and whether it was a bunt or a slow-roller she always got the out that was needed. Our center fielder, Christina Leader, is great in the outfield. She is smart, has a strong arm and as soon as she caught any ball she knew exactly what play was coming next.
When it came to hitting this season, Leigha Eyster, our right fielder, has been awesome. She always made that clutch hit when we needed it most.
Nicole Pironi, our second baseman, is also a great hitter. She made good contact with the ball all season, and we knew whenever she was up we could count on her to hit the ball.
Marly Becker, Leanne Farmer, Miwa Wenzel and Caitlin Kline have all helped us out a lot this season. Each one of them saw the ball very well and was able to get those key hits that we needed during the season.
Since the season ended, our seniors on the team are getting ready for college. I will be playing softball at DeSales University next year.
I chose DeSales because I loved the softball program there and they have a good program for my major, which is TV/film.
Two years ago we had two members of the varsity softball team leave to go play college softball. Those two players are Cassie Reilly-Boccia, who plays for Alabama and Kasey O'Connor, who plays for Notre Dame.
It's been so much fun watching them play in college and we wish them the best of luck in their future college seasons. As a team we are sad that our season is over, but each one of us gave it everything we had each game this season and because of that we end our season with no regrets.
