Girls Basketball Review: Yorktown

Huskers gave it their all during their season

Yorktown (0-18) may have not been able to garner a victory this winter but it wasn't because of a lack of effort as the team maintained a good attitude all season, according to coach Dan Lopez.

"The girls really did believe in themselves, in their abilities despite the way the season turned out," Lopez said. "There are a lot of things that definitely could've went our way because the record we had doesn't really reflect the talent of our girls whatsoever. They gave everything they had, all the way to the end."

Leading the way for the Huskers this year were senior co-captains, guard Nicole Palmadesso, center Sam Corrado and guard Marissa Makar.

"Nicole really filled into her role as the point guard," Lopez said. "She was able to change roles and hand it off to somebody else. She could also play a two which was beneficial. She did a great job running the show this year."

Corrado provided great inside play to the Huskers.

"Sam was a workhorse," Lopez said. "Every time she was in the paint, she was fighting for rebounds, trying to get put backs, trying to do everything she could. She set screens. She had a lot of opportunities to get points."

One of those games was the season finale.

"A lot of shots didn't fall in her direction but in the last game against Hen Hud she really had an opportunity to shine," Lopez said. "She had her moments throughout the season."

That game against Hen Hud the Huskers led basically the entire game before a 3-pointer by the Sailors tied it and forced overtime, in a game Hen Hud won 39-35.

Displaying leadership in that game and throughout the season was Makar.

"Marissa really took a leadership role," Lopez said. "She was very vocal and adamant on how to get things done. The girls bought into it and followed her lead. She carried us a lot of the time. She had a really good game against Hen Hud, controlling the game, with a lot of rebounds and steals."

"She pretty much played the entire game, I don't think I took her out except for a minute or two break," Lopez continued. "She really showed her strength and leadership in that game."
