Laborers, Electricians Recruiting Hudson Valley Apprentices

YORKTOWN, NY — Two local unions will be starting recruitment drives in August. One is looking for skilled construction craft laborers, and the other is seeking electrician apprentices.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Laborers, Local Union #235, will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 27, 2018 through Aug. 23, 2019 for three skilled construction craft laborer apprentices.

The three openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions, the Capital District and Hudson Valley regions. This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #235, 41 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union #363, will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 6, 2018 through May 10, 2019 for 15 electrician apprentices.

Applications can be obtained and submitted, in person only, at Local Union #363, 67 Commerce Drive South, Harriman, NY, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Aug. 6 through Aug. 10, 2018, and during the first full business week in November of 2018 (November 5-9), February of 2019 (February 4-8), and May of 2019 (May 6-10).

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #363, which includes the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster (also includes parts of Delaware County* and Greene County**, see below).

*In Delaware County - The townships of Andes, Harpersfield, Kortright, Stamford, Bovina, Roxbury, and Middletown; also the portions of Colchester and Hancock townships south of the East Branch of the Delaware River.

**In Greene County - That portion of the county which lies south of a line following the south limits of the City of Catskill in a westerly direction from the Hudson River to Highway 23A along to the road following the Little West Kill, and continuing along this road to Delaware County.

  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), including one year of completing algebra with a passing grade.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a physician, at the expense of the sponsor’s health plan, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must attest that they are physically able to perform the work of an electrician, which may include:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, or towers of various heights.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces such as attics, manholes, and crawl spaces.
    • Lifting heavy tools and materials and standing for longer periods of time.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites (anywhere within the geographical area this apprenticeship covers).
  • Must be willing and able to all related classroom training as required to complete this apprenticeship program.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to read and understand English.
  • Must be able to read, hear, and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English.
  • Must provide a copy of their birth certificate and Social Security card at the time of job offer.
  • Must receive a qualifying score on the Electrical Trades aptitude test administered by the LU 363.

Apprentice programs registered with the New York State Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
