Lakeland Student Plans Event To Benefit Cancer Organization
An intern at the organization is using the skills she's learned to help raise funds for it.

YORKTOWN, NY — A Lakeland High School student participating in the school's civic internship program has organized a fundraising event to benefit nonprofit that supports people affected by cancer. On Sunday, Jan. 14, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Solaris Sports Club in Yorktown Heights will host a fun, all-ages event called “Sunday Fun Day.” Proceeds will benefit Support Connection, which provides free and confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer.
“Sunday Fun Day” is being organized by Marissa Shapiro, a Lakeland High School student. While interning at Support Connection, Shapiro has been learning the fundamental skills necessary for event planning. Her mentors at Support Connection, Executive Director Katherine Quinn, along with Development & Outreach Coordinators Marisa Giuliano and Melissa Higgins, are looking forward to seeing the culmination of Shapiro’s efforts at the January function.
At this family friendly event, people of all ages will enjoy dancing at a one-hour Zumba lesson from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will also be various children’s activities, basketball, badminton and volleyball throughout the afternoon. Snacks and refreshments will be served, and a raffle will also take place. Admission is free and everyone is welcome; no RSVP is necessary. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
