Lakeland first baseman Nick Mariani belted a three-run homer over the right-center field fence in the bottom of the seventh to pull his squad to within four but the Hornets couldn't get any closer as Beacon held on for a 13-9 baseball triumph at LHS under the lights on May 2.
"I was just looking for a fastball, we were down by a lot, it was late, I knew he (Beacon pitcher) was just going to get it over the plate so I just tried to drive it," Mariani said.

Mariani's homer was part of a six-run inning for the Hornets. A single by Matt Wright and a two-run base hit by Anthony Fava also drove in runs in that frame for the Hornets.
"It just shows what kind of team we are," Mariani said. "We are never going to give up, we are always going to be in the games. We are not going to stop coming at you."
That never-say-die attitude is something that has always been a trademark of Lakeland baseball, according to coach Dennis Robinson.
"All the years that we have been here, that has been our M.O.," Robinson said. "You could see the excitement and enthusiasm."
Beacon at one point was up 9-0 before the Hornets got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. They were driven in on a two-run hit by Ray Bozek and an RBI single by Wright.

One of the annual must-see events on the local sports calender is the Charlie Murphy Cup boys lacrosse contest between Yorktown and Lakeland/Panas, which will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at .

Rebels Victorious
Lakeland/Panas' Alexa Bonnes scored five goals for the Rebels in their 14-10 triumph at Brewster on May 2 according to Gina Pernicano's post on the LoHud Girls Lacrosse Blog.
Amanda Vasta tallied four goals for the Rebels.
