Police Rescue Dog From Car, Arrest Owner

Police said the vehicle's interior temperature was 105 degrees.

YORKTOWN, NY — Police rescued a dog from a car and charged its owner — an Illinois resident — with a town code violation. Yorktown police said an animal control officer and a police officer responded to 3800 Crompond Rd. around 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 for a report of an unattended dog left in a vehicle.

When they got there, they found a small male brown and white dog inside a parked, unattended vehicle in the parking lot.

Police said the vehicle was in direct sunlight and the ambient air temperature was 80 degrees.

The officers said they were able to get into the vehicle and remove the dog.

They put him into an air-conditioned police vehicle and took him to Yorktown Animal Hospital where he was evaluated and treated.

Police identified the owner of the animal as Kawanie K. Williams-Bevis, 22, of Country Club Hills, IL, and it is alleged he endangered the dog’s health and well being by leaving it alone in the parked vehicle.

Williams-Bevis showed up at Yorktown Police Headquarters Saturday, Aug. 25 where he was charged with confinement of an animal in motor vehicle, a town code violation.

He was issued an appearance ticket to appear in Yorktown Justice Court Sept. 20 and was released on his own recognizance.

A call to the Yorktown Police Department regarding the status of the dog was not immediately returned.
