We thank Lakeland/Panas Rebel stats Ian Godridge and Jesse Czuy for their help during the game:

In what was the first of what most feel will be two games this season between the two local powerhouses, Lakeland/Panas' boys lacrosse squad defeated visiting Mahopac in overtime 6-5 on April 24.

The winning goal was scored by Brian Prunty with just seven seconds remaining in overtime with the assist coming from Tony LaGuerre, giving Mahopac its first loss of the season after eight wins.

“Tony made a couple of nice moves like that all game," Prunty said. "I missed a couple. I knew I had to put it low. Tony made a great run and the defense did a great job of getting us the ball back.”

The Rebels (7-3) were led by three goals from Chris Monteferante, who will be playing lacrosse at West Point in the fall. Monteferante's third goal put the Rebels up 5-2 with 3:36 to go in the third quarter before Mahopac rallied to tie it up and force overtime.

“Both teams came out with a lot of intensity," Monteferante said. "In the second half, we started making better plays but then they started capitalizing on the mistakes that we made so it got tied up."

"In the end, it came down to those little inches, groundball here, groundball there, missed shot here, failed clear there. Luckily, it ended up in our favor.”

The Rebels are hoping would also end in their favor at the end of the year, when most expect these two titans to battle in the Section 1 Class A title game.

“It’s a statement game," Monteferante said. "Last year we went up to their place and they gave us a good beating and they ended up beating us in the section final. This year we beat them to kind of give us a mental edge going into the section final.”

Grant Perez and Sean Murphy also scored for the Rebels with Ryan Bonifati adding an assist. Rebels' standout goalie Mike Zingaro made seven tough saves.

“After losing to them twice last year, we definitely had a bitter taste in our mouths," Prunty said. "It was nice to get this win tonight. We still have to keep getting better. They are a great team, we probably will see them later so credit to them as well.”

Fundraiser

What better way to celebrate a big win for Lakeland/Panas fans than attending the Rebels' boys lacrosse fundraiser at Comedy Night at Cortlandt Colonial, Friday April 27 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Huskers Victorious

We thank Yorktown softball coach John McKenna for the below submission of Yorktown's 2-0 win against visiting Carmel on April 24:

Carmel High School and 's Varsity Softball battled in what turned out to be a pitching duel between Jasmine Ennanbe of Carmel and Nicole Wilson of Yorktown. Both pitchers keep the offense to a minimum during the game.

Jasmine Ennanbe of Carmel pitches 6 innings of 3-hit ball, 8 K's and 2 earned runs. She was out dueled by Nicole Wilson.

Yorktown scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Those were all the runs Nicole needed, she pitched 7 innings of 2-hit ball and 7 K's. Nicole also drove the first run of the game and scored the second run on a fielder's choice from Marly Becker.
