Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Hosts Scholastic Book Fair “Fiesta”

There were tables covered with brand new books on everything from science fiction to history, a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog and a reception for students and their families. It was all part of the Book Fair Fiesta, an annual book fair for Walden and Pines Bridge students.

The fair kicked off with a “Sneak Peek” on Friday, May 2, during which staff and students browsed and created wish lists of items they wanted to purchase at the fair. The week of May 5 through May 9, the book fair welcomed students and staff during school hours.

A special Family Night took place last Tuesday, during which students and parents enjoyed refreshments while browsing for books.  Pines Bridge student Amanda Cantatore’s family won a $100 basket of books from Scholastic during the Family Night event.

Clifford the Big Red Dog made a much-enjoyed visit to classrooms at the Walden and Pines Bridge schools during the week of the fair, and, in keeping with the fiesta theme, the friendly canine sported a sombrero during his rounds.

Walden and Pines Bridge students also participated in a Battle of the Coins, a contest to see which class could collect the most loose change to support Scholastic’s All for Books program. All for Books matches funds collected and donates books to organizations in need. This year the two organizations selected were Kids in Distressed Situations and the Kids in Need Foundation.

The “battle” yielded a total of $758.36, which was distributed to Walden and Pines Bride speech therapists, each of whom received $30 to spend on the book fair for their students; a child from each Pines Bridge and Walden classroom, who received a $10 cash prize to be spent at the fair; and the library, which will use the remaining funds to replenish its bookshelves.
