Getting a 100th career goal is a thrill any time and even sweeter when it comes in a sectional game on your own turf.

That was the case for Yorktown senior Stefanie Ranagan. She scored her 100th career goal with 4:51 left to play, giving the defending Class B champion Huskers a 9-3 lead in a game they won 10-3 on Thursday afternoon, in a Section 1 Class B opening-round contest against No. 10 Tappan Zee.
“It was really exciting, it’s something I have been working towards all season and all year, since I have been playing,” Ranagan said. “I really wanted to accomplish that this year.”
Ranagan, who will play next year at Manhattan College, led No. 7 Yorktown with five goals. She was followed by Emily Concialdi (4G) and Gaby Berne (1G, 1A).
Jenna Gammer, Bianca Raniolo, Emalee Mongno and Kara Starkey each registered an assist apiece for the Huskers.
Katie Frederick played a strong game in goal with 10 saves for host Yorktown, who led 4-0 at halftime.
“I thought our defense played pretty well,” Yorktown coach Ellen Mager said. “It took our offense awhile to figure out what it wanted to do. We had a lot of opportunities where we could’ve opened the game up a lot sooner.”
Yorktown will now travel to No. 2 John Jay on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a quarterfinal contest. The two teams split their regular-season matchups, with the Huskers winning at home on opening day 17-16, March 28.
John Jay returned the favor at its place, winning 14-11 on April 25.
“If we all come together as one, we should do well on Saturday,” Ranagan said.
Nash Excels
Thanks to Lakeland stat Drew Cregan with his assistance in getting the lineups and compiling the stats:
Senior pitcher Mike Nash got the mound assignment on senior night and he made sure it was one to remember by throwing a complete-game two hitter in Lakeland’s 4-1 baseball victory against visiting Brewster on Thursday night.
“Early on I didn’t feel like I had great command of my off-speed pitches,” Nash said. “Later on in the game coach Mike (Robinson) came out to the mound, slowed me down, made me stay on top of my curve-ball. After that I just got into a rhythm. It felt great to get out there and do what I do best.”
The offense did what it does best in the fourth inning, when it came through in the clutch with four runs on RBI singles by Chris Conklin, Andrew Martinez, Ryan Arena and Ray Bozek.
“We always have that one big inning,” Nash said. “We come back, we hit, get our runs. It felt great to take the lead. Then with our solid defense behind me, I know if I just throw strikes good things are going to happen.”
Anthony Fava stood out offensively, going 3 for 3 with a run scored for the Hornets.
Nick Mariani, Dan Phillips, Matt Wright, Joe Dizon, James Kim and Corey Smith are the other Lakeland seniors along with Nash.
