Registered Nurses: A Top Trending Job Title In The Hudson Valley

YORKTOWN, NY — Registered nurses were recently ranked No. 2 on the state Department of Labor's recently released list of the Hudson Valley's Top Five Trending Jobs for 2017, coming in not too far behind physical therapists at No. 1.

With an above-average wage of $82,230 and a high likelihood of continued growth in the Hudson Valley through the end of 2017, registered nurses were determined to be a top trending job by labor market expert analysis of survey data as well as the area’s projected needs.

According to All Nursing Schools, an online directory of nursing education and careers, registered nurses hold a wide range of duties, from prepping patients for exams, providing medication to patients, updating and maintaining records, and taking vital signs, among several other responsibilities. On a personal level, the site noted, registered nurses should be excellent listeners, clear communicators, good-natured, ethical, and have a high tolerance for stress, to name just a few desirable qualities.

The minimum degree requirement for a registered nurse is an associate’s degree, although bachelor’s degrees in nursing can increase a registered nurse’s earning potential, according to All Nursing Schools. After completing a degree program, potential registered nurses must apply for a nursing license from New York State and pass a national licensure exam. In order for a registered nurse to become a midwife or a nurse practitioner, a master’s degree is required.
