Rick Cerrone Named Yorktown Youth Advocate

Rick Cerrone, former New York Yankees executive who is originally from Yorktown, is the 2011 Joan Valenstein Memorial Youth Advocate recipient.

Members of the Board of Directors have announced that former New York Yankees executive Rick Cerrone is the 2011 Joan Valenstein Memorial Youth Advocate recipient.

The award is to recognize his support and dedication to the Teen Center. Among his continuous contribution was the seeking from various businesses and community groups.

"His visionary work came to full flourish, providing the teens with a comfortable and inviting environment where they can safely congregate in town," said Helena Rodriguez, president of the Teen Center Board of Directors.

Cerrone was raised in Yorktown and attended an earlier version of the Teen Center 35 years ago. What was formerly known as the Teen Canteen stood where the Alternative High School in town is now located. 

"I am truly humbled to be honored by the Yorktown Teen Center with the Joan Valenstein Memorial Youth Advocate Award," Cerrone said. "The renovation of the Teen Center was a joyous experience and could not have been possible without the enthusiasm and commitment of so many members of the community. I will be happy to accept this honor on behalf of these very generous individuals."

The award he received was created in honor of Valenstein, who was a youth advocate and a founding members of the Teen Center Board. She passed away in May 2010 after a car accident.

Cerrone's career included being editor and publisher of a national baseball magazine, major league baseball executive and talk show host. He inspires people through his public speaking where he references professional sports stories and personal anecdotes.

He will be honored at the Yorktown Teen Center anniversary dinner on Oct. 20, 2011.
