Science 21, the hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum for grades one through six, is accustomed to being recognized for its engaging, innovative approach to teaching science but now it is known for something else as well: its website.
Recently redesigned by Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Graphic Designer Tricia O’Neill and Science 21 Coordinator David Jacob with help from technology specialist Lynn Nole, the new website was recognized by the Advertising Club of Westchester for excellence in online marketing. The Advertising Club honors outstanding work in public relations, advertising, promotions, email marketing and online marketing.
Science 21 is an integrated K-6 science curriculum developed locally and regionally at BOCES. It is a science program designed by teachers for teachers. It is linked to the New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science and Technology.

The new Science 21 website features whimsical characters aligned to specific units of study, clear explanations of the curriculum and resources for administrators, teachers and parents. Administrators can access manuals, information about the curriculum and professional development resources.
Teachers can access information on the curriculum, literacy and differentiation, and technology resources all through the website. By organizing information by grade level, the redesigned website makes it easy for teachers to access all the resources they need in one place.

A key feature of the new site is the “Science 21 Team,” a group of colorful, cartoon characters representing the live animals used in the program including a newt, ladybug, crayfish, triop, two butterflies, a pillbug and hermit crab. In September, the characters will be available for teachers to download for use in their classrooms.
