Season in Review: Yorktown Softball
Junior center fielder Miwa Wenzel led Huskers at the plate.

Yorktown lost nine of its first 12 games but rallied to end their season with an 11-11 record, including two games in the Section 1 Class AA tournament.
No. 17 Yorktown lost to No. 1 Ketcham 3-2 in the opening round after beating No. 16 Mamaroneck 8-4 in the out-bracket game.
“We came together and now with the team bonding, next year is going to be a different story, we can get a quick start right away,” Yorktown coach John McKenna said. “We want to challenge for a league title, win the league and seed high in the section.”

Leading the Huskers at the plate was all-section junior center fielder Miwa Wenzel. She had a .531 batting average with a .570 on base percentage and 39 hits.
Wenzel was also a nightmare for the opposition on the base paths with over 20 steals.

“Her slapping skills have taken a tremendous jump from one year to the next,” McKenna said. “She just has a soft touch with the slap and it’s just mainly impossible to get her out with her speed.”
Earning all-section honorable mention honors was junior pitcher Nicole Wilson, who finished with a .442 batting average and a .481 on base percentage.
“You take that with her clutch hitting in big situations, plus the way she turned our season around by putting us on her arm with her pitching, she is a complete player,” McKenna said.
Another all-section honorable mention Husker was sophomore left fielder/third baseman Kayla Michelson, who was an extra-base machine with five home runs and 10 doubles, not to mention a great glove as well.
Earning all-league honors were two sophomores—catcher/first baseman Marly Becker and third baseman LeAnne Farmer, who were the backbone of the defense, according to McKenna, in addition to each batting over .300.
