Yorktown enjoyed a solid season this spring, going 13-8 and qualifying for the Section 1 Class AA tournament, where it fell to Clarkstown North 5-2 in the opening round.
"I was happy that we had good team chemistry. It was a group that played together for a long time," Yorktown senior shortstop Erica Wenzel said. "I know we didn't play as well as we would've liked in the sectionals but I had a lot of fun this year and overall we had a good season."
Wenzel and senior catcher Laura Pironi were both named all-section; sophomore pitcher/outfielder Nicole Wilson earned all-section honorable mention honors; and senior pitcher Carolyn Farmer and senior second baseman Nicole Pironi were both named all-league.

"It meant a great deal to our team that so many of us earned honors such as all-section and all-league," Laura Pironi said. "It's always really nice to hear about your teammates getting honored. I think the reason so many players on our team were able to earn these honors is because we have some really great all-around players on our team who always are trying to improve their game and who are very dedicated to softball."
Both Wenzel and Laura Pironi were pleased at being named all-section.

"That was really nice for me," Wenzel said. "I also received all-section last year too. It felt great and I was very happy that I could continue with that. I improved my batting average from last year which was one of my goals for this season."
Earning all-section meant a great deal to Laura Pironi as well.
"I felt very honored to receive this award because there are so many great players throughout all of the high school softball teams who also deserve this award, so to be picked it's truly an honor," Laura Pironi said.
The Husker catcher felt the team was able to qualify for the sectionals because of its tight bond and hard work.
"Our teammates always believed in one another and believed in the fact that we could go far as a team," Laura Pironi said. "Also we were all very determined during season and trained hard because we really wanted to go as far as we possibly could. These things helped us get to sectionals. I felt good about the year our team had because throughout the season we all gave it everything we had each time we stepped onto the field whether it was practice or a game and you can't really ask more of a team."
For Lakeland (7-13) winning all-section honorable mention for the Hornets was senior shortstop Taylor Bell.
"Taylor was a consistent hitter for us, she hit .353," Lakeland coach Joe Chiara said. "She had a great four-year career for us where she got a lot of big hits and drove in runs for us when we needed it. Defensively, she got to every ball and made all the plays she had to in the field. She had a great work ethic. We are going to miss her."
Earning all-league was junior pitcher Katie Champagne, who played the outfield when she wasn't on the mound.
"Katie had the ability to throw different pitches and her control was good," Chiara said. "She did a nice job keeping us in games. You have to remember too this was only her first year of pitching on the varsity so this experience will make her even better next year now that she has a year of playing on the varsity under her belt. She was also one of the stronger bats in our lineup. She hit .357 and had 11 RBI, one behind Taylor."
Chiara felt that junior center fielder Lindsay Dring also had a solid season for a squad that qualified for the Class A sectionals.
"Lindsay did a nice job defensively and at the plate hit. 300," Chiara said. "With her and Katie next year, we have two really good players to lead us."
