A Spotlight on Giving: Yorktown Love In Action Inc.

Each morning a small group of hard working volunteers open the warehouse doors to welcome in the day. What will today bring? A family in need after a household fire? A single mother looking for clothes for her children? A budget conscious couple looking to furnish their first apartment? Or the collector searching for that last needed piece to finish the set?
No day is typical for YORKTOWN Love In Action, Inc (YLIA), a local 501(c)(3) not for profit charitable organization. People shuffle in to donate items. People come in to browse. Many times they do both. Furniture is delivered and put out on the floor. This large donation center acts as storage and showroom for the acquired goods. Since 2011, under founder and local resident Donna Simone, YLIA has been serving Westchester and Putnam families or individuals that have fallen on hard times due to an unexpected life event. Through the monetary and household donation received, Simone and her volunteers can give new hope to their clientele.
Simone started YLIA with the idea that neighboor can reach out to help neighboor. It is this belief that initiated her dream to see the whole community reaching out to one another, caring, giving, and helping. "It's always a little easier getting through those difficult times when there is someone walking through them with you," states Simone.

During this holiday season many of us may be asking how we can help others. YLIA runs a "Heart of Faith" program to connect generous people to families in need, where both sides remain anonymous. Other benefactors prefer to sponsor a family annually. And if you know a family in need, or are in need yourself, please reach out to Simone.
A busy day winds down. It's getting dark outside, and the volunteers start to dwindle and head home. A turn of the key locks the warehouse door, just until tomorrow, when a bright new day at YLIA can begin again.
